Whistler Composting is a new facility that can compost a large variety and mix of organic material, including biosolids from Whistler’s new wastewater treatment plant, yard and garden wastes, food wastes from restaurants, hotels and grocery stores, and wood products wastes – turning them into Class A compost.
The Resort Municipality of Whistler has contracted Carney’s Waste Systems to compost commercial and residential organic wastes, and to sell organic soil products to residential and commercial customers.
Using state of the art in-vessel composting tunnels, Whistler Composting helps move the Whistler community towards its goal of zero waste. The in-vessel system processes complex feedstock, while addressing concerns of odor generation and leachate. The system relies on fully enclosed flowthrough tunnels to transform organic wastes into a fine soil-like material over a 14-day period. By controlling oxygen, moisture and temperature, the in-vessel system provides control over the decomposition of organic matter that exceeds all standards set for composting facilities in North America, the United Kingdom and Europe. Compact, fully enclosed and modular in design, the system is not affected by the weather.

Compost Enriched Soil - The Benefits
Organic wastes from Whistler Composting are turned into a variety of soil products that can be used for gardening and landscaping. These soil products:
- Increase beneficial microbial activity in the soil, resulting in improved disease resistance
- Increase organic matter in deficient native soils
- Improve aeration, water absorption and moisture retention
- Provide immediate and long-lasting nutrients to plants
- Improve the ability of a plant root system to remove nutrients from native soils
